Latina Women

The adaptation process remained faithful to the underlying theories and core elements of the original SiSTA intervention. To assess the AMIGAS intervention effects for the entire 6-month follow-up period, we constructed logistic and linear generalized estimating equation regression models to control for repeated within-person measurements.34,35 These models incorporated the study conditions as well as covariates and outcomes. We adjusted models for the corresponding baseline measure and covariates to obtain AORs and adjusted mean differences. We also computed the 95% confidence interval and the corresponding P value.

Latinas are underrepresented as business owners, especially among the Fortune 500 companies. However, ownership among Latina entrepreneurs has grown immensely over the past 15 years.

Using the art of photography, she gave POC with mental health issues a voice and successfully addressed the homogenized stereotypes about mental health problems, and stigmas in the communities of color. NHBA is a national network of undergraduate student organizations dedicated to helping Hispanics launch successful business careers. Through our family of 41 chapters, they provide career development, professional networking, and community building opportunities to their undergraduate members. If health care and support for Hispanic/Latina women with breast cancer is to improve, breast cancer awareness outreach needs to happen in communities where Hispanic/Latina women gather for meetings or social events, such as schools, houses of worship, and community centers. Materials need to be in Spanish and community educators, preferably survivors, ideally need to be an ethnic and cultural match to the women living in those communities.

Maria Irene Fornes, a Cuban immigrant to the United States, created plays that focused on feminism and poverty. Her success in the 1960s gave Latina immigrants a presence in off-Broadway productions. Another Cuban immigrant, Ana Mendieta, created sculptures, performances, and many other art mediums that focused on themes of women, life experiences, and earth.

From Malinche to Selena, we learn who and what drove the lives, passions and successes of these amazing, but often overlooked women. From trailblazers to entertainers, doctors to activists and leaders, the glimpses into their lives educate and inspire.

Some argue it’s a pipeline issue – that if we can interest more young girls in STEM subjects, the issue will resolve itself over time. After all, the percentage of women in computer science has actually decreased since 1991. Launched in 1998, the LATINA Style Business Series is the most successful business development program for Latina Business owners in the nation.

When it comes to a population of individuals, the group may have some common characteristics, but each individual woman, her family, and her health care team can have a unique set of issues that affect the medical and surgical treatment of her breast cancer. Providing access to a culturally appropriate community health worker during breast cancer screenings may impact elements of patient care and satisfaction among Hispanic/Latina women, Vanderbilt University Medical Center researchers report in American Journal of Roentgenology. Furthermore, women pursuing college degrees are on average older than their male counterparts, and tend to go into lower-paying career fields at disproportionate rates. Women also hold an unequal share of the nation’s outstanding student-loan debt — two-thirds of the pie, according to the American Association of University Women — despite the fact that fewer women have college degrees.

And, this pay gap widened over previous year when it “only” took until November 1 for Hispanic women catch up to non-Hispanic men. But these data do not tell the full story of how labor-market changes have affected women of color with low incomes. Discrimination in the labor market also plays a role; Black and Latina women have higher-than-average unemployment even during periods of economic growth. The precariousness of the low-wage labor market, including frequent job loss and unpredictable hours, means that a number of low-wage workers are between jobs at any given time.

Everything from countries of origin, to social class, to where raised, to education, to non-sociological factors like being who you are and liking what you like impacts who we are. I won’t take reasonability for “these articles” because I’ve written only one article about being Latina where I specifically open on how not everyone is the same. You might like my article about labels and identity… where I specifically talk about the white privilege I experience as a Latina and how identities are complex. I suggest spending more time looking through a personal blog before leaving harsh, accusing comments. I don’t know what that other guy is talking about but one thing you should know is almost all Latina women won’t put up with a cheater.

If you take care of your Latina woman, she’s going to make sure that no one can take care of you like she does. They want to communicate (in case you couldn’t tell with all my writing and expressing myself through fashion and dance HAHA). Latina women need to feel needed, so they subconsciously let a man feel needed. Culturally, many of us in heterosexual relationships haven’t let go of traditional practices. The opening of doors, letting women go first, and men walking on the outside of the sidewalk are all old-school practices in courtship.

  • We contribute to prior geographically focused research by evaluating the association of the 2016 presidential election with preterm births among Latina women using national data with an interrupted time series design that controlled for temporal variation that might otherwise lead to spurious findings.
  • Because preterm birth varies seasonally,20 for example, a comparison between the periods before and after an event such as a presidential election should ensure that any association does not arise solely from seasonally expected shifts from lower to higher numbers of preterm births.
  • In the only study of the potential effect of the 2016 presidential election on birth outcomes, Krieger and colleagues19 found that the rate of preterm births among Latina women in New York, New York, increased from 7.7% before the inauguration to 8.2% after.
  • Our results suggest that the 2016 US presidential election was associated with an increase in preterm births among US Latina women.

Telemundo is also partnering with the University of Miami School of Business to present an executive leadership training program. Monica Gil of Telemundo speaks to Know Your Value founder Mika Brzezinski about what it will take to close the wage gap for Latinas.

Generalized linear models with a log link were used to obtain prevalence ratios for dichotomous health indicators for women with a lifetime IPV history compared to women without a lifetime IPV history. Multivariable ordinary least squares regression was used to estimate mean differences in SF-36 scores and number of symptoms. Models were adjusted for age and income, factors, which could confound the relationship between IPV history and health.

The word Latino is short for LatinoAmericano, which translates to Latin American. It was originally adopted in the US for the purpose of additional categorization of the population in the United States Census. Teenage Latinas are often met with pressure to meet these cultural standards, and this pressure can lead to development of anxiety and depression. These cultural factors do not favor reaching out for mental health assistance, making addressing the mental health concerns difficult. Despite this, many Latina women are finding their voice through mental health activism. Dior Vargas, a Latina feminist and mental health activists, created Color of My Mind, a collection of content from her People of Color Mental Health Phot Project.

Much of my research up to this point led me to the belief that relationships for them are anything but shallow, and your article reinforces much of what I have read. I am led to believe a very high percentage of Latinas truly feel that a relationship means true companionship and the desire to walk life’s path together. While I realize that there are always exceptions, would you say that the vast majority feel this way? Unfortunately, in this day and age this way of approaching relationships seems to be so very hard to find.

Though Brazil is part of Latin America, it is not a Spanish-speaking country, and is excluded from the category of Latinos by the United States Census office. Currently, there are over 20 million immigrant women residing in the United States. The Gap Hurts Women And Families

However, they end up completely ignoring their own health in the process, and these acts of selflessness can become deadly. As Brazil and Spain are not disaggregated as Hispanic origin options in the Current Population Survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, it is not possible to distinguish between Hispanic women and Latinas in the dataset we used for our regression analysis. As such, we use the terms interchangeably except when reviewing the research findings specifically about Latina or Hispanic women. The media’s hypersexualization of Latina women has associated their accents with being sexy, which hypersexualizes an entire language.
